P Class Intergalactics Freshwater Champs

P Class Intergalactics Freshwater Champs Pupuke Boating Club hosted the P Class Intergalactics at the weekend. 25 boats competed. Results are in the Results Center. Seven LT Windsurfers competed with the usual ILCA fleet.

Freshwater ILCA Write up

A great fleet of over 40 ILCA’s, glorious sunshine the whole weekend and warm enough to sail in the summer gear, the weekend had just about everything it needed for a top class weekend of racing. And then there was the wind. Saturdays 3 to 5 knot Southeasterly was challenging to say the least, but RO Wayne Ferguson managed to squeeze in the scheduled 4  races before the breeze gave up completely. All the races were short single lap W/L courses with big shifts and light veins of the breeze coming down the course with very little pressure in between. Sunday was a slight improvement with the breeze to about 10 knots in some puffs, but again a minefield of lifts, knocks and calm patches. Sundays scheduled 3 races were completed, again on W/L courses but the extra wind allowed longer multi lap races and provided some really good racing. The local Auckland fleet was bolstered by a great contingent from as far away the BOI in the north and Tauranga in the south, with youths mixing it with the local Pupuke Masters. Any local knowledge from the Pupuke fleet was completely negated by the very unusual SE breeze and in both the ILCA 6 and ILCA 7 fleets youth and talent decisively trumped any whisp of local knowledge! In the ILCA 7 Murrays Bay’s Youth sailor Liam Dimock really dominated the weekend with 5 bullets in 7 races to decisively take the title. Multiple World Masters Champ Scott Leith was super consistent to take the Masters trophy and come in second overall ahead of Open sailors Zack Stibbe and Beau Utting. Andrew Child from Taipa had a couple of great races but struggled for consistency (as did almost everyone else) to be the leading AM while Pupuke locals Tony Nicholson (GM) and Graham Donovan (AM) led the local Pupuke fleet, tied on points in 6th and 7th. Another PBC stalwart, Gary Lock led the GGM contingent, who all notably showed the wrong sort of consistency over the weekend. In the Radials it was the youths who dominated, with Tom Pilkington’s victorious, a second place as his discard fairy reflecting his dominance of the fleet. There was a great contest for the remaining podium places, with Murrays Bay’s Filippo Bassano strong first day setting him up to take second from Tauranga’s Thomas Linklater in third. They were closely followed by Toby Dunn who also had some great races but a couple of hiccups undid his for claim a podium place.   Phil Wild was the leading Master, doing just enough to hold out leading women Arabella Vennell (M), who had an outstanding run of results on the Sunday after a slightly slow start. Other notable performances included Callum Hyde, who pulled one out of the bag to win the last race and Tauranga’s Ethan Guard  who got a top result in Saturdays last race to show that the top order were human after all. 2026 Freshwaters has over 40 boats

Kindly sponsored by Burnsco Albany, the 2026 North Shore Freshwater Champs was a geat success attracting over 40 boats. Lian Dimock took out the ILCA7 fleet with an impressive 5 race wins while Tom Pilkington took out the ILCA6 trophy. scott Leith and Phil Wild won the respective Masters titles. Arabella Vennell in 6th overall was first woman, beating Charlotte Bob 1st of the youth girls. RESULTS and in the results center.

Winter Wednesday Sailing – New Series

Yes, Pupuke Boating Club has identified there are enough retired (OAPs) and other people available for a Wednesday Evening Series. Start time is 3pm. 50% of the races to count so you only need to show up every other Wednesday to qualify for the series.

Freshwater Champs – save the date

The North Shore Freshwater Championships is coming soon on 16th and 17th May. There will be fleets for ILCA6’s and ILCA7’s and everyone is welcome. Any other Classes (6 or more boats) that want to sail contact the Commodore John Dowsett. (see contacts)

Sad News

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Garth Briden. Garth is pictured helping Pupuke Boating Club at the recent North Harbour Masters. He wanted to keep doing what he loved. Knowing he was ill, it was good that so many of the sailors were able to say thank you and their goodbye at both the North Harbours and a special function held at Tamaki Yacht Club.Garth will be sorely missed by all who knew him, but his memory and the impact he made will live on forever. Rest in peace, Garth.

Wednesday Start time now 6.15pm sharp!

At the recent AGM the start time for Wednesday nights has been changed to 6.15pm. This change reflects the increase in travel times for sailors trying to make a Wednesday evening start. Due to the amount of daylight it was deemed best to make the 6.15pm start time fixed and that racing will happen at 6.15pm at the LATEST. This is aimed at stopping people turning up late, even though the time has been pushed back, and delaying the start for other sailors.

2025 Freshwaters -Pupuke Boating Club

Lake Pupuke turned on a very tricky but enjoyable weekend for the 2025 NSFWC, with a fleet of over 30 ILCA 6’s and 7’s completing 7 races over the two days. We welcomed a good number of out of town visitors and enjoyed close racing in both fleets all weekend.   The forecast was for light N winds on Saturday freshening significantly on Sunday, however the fresh winds on Sunday never eventuated and racing on both days was held in sub 10 knot N winds with many light patches and shifts to negotiate, taxing the race committee as well as the sailors.    A strong ILCA 6 youth contingent competed, a number of whom are training for the ILCA youth world later in the year. In spite of the tricky conditions results followed the pattern of recent regattas with a super consistent Tom Pilkington convincingly taking the title, winning 4 races along the way. Sam Clarke was a clear 2nd, winning 2 of the other races with Arran Begic completing the podium. Miro Luxford, who travelled up from Christchurch for the weekend,  was 4th followed by the first Master, Dave Johnson from Tauranga. Chloe Turner was the first of the women ahead of master Georgina Wooldridge and Boe Reiff from Bay of Islands.   In the ILCA 7 it was another of the Pilkington clan, U21 George, who triumphed, counting 3 wins and 3 seconds, to take the title from Zach Stibbe and Max Faulkner. Convincingly leading the strong masters contingent was apprentice Andrew Child from Taipa. He and top GGM David Giles finished with a significant points advantage over a close group of masters, all of whom seemed to manage to achieve a mix of success and disasters in roughly equal measure over the 7 races to all end up close on points.   Prize giving was the usual entertaining affair, with commodore John Dowsett dolling out prizes with banter to suit, particularly targeting the (to remain anonymous) youth parents urging on selection of the wine and rum spot prizes by their charges from the sidelines!   So another successful event to wrap up a very successful seasons regattas for ILCA and best of luck to all those competing at ILCA worlds over the next few months.   Results
